The plant employs a pre-fermentation tank that processes locally-produced corn into biogas for its conversion into electricity.

According to Enovos, the pre-fermentation tank that , enables higher biogas production is the first of its kind in the Benelux region.

The substrates resulting from the fermentation are used as fertilizers in the corn fields.

Engines at the Biopower Tongeren will operate for 8,200 hours on average each year and the electricity generated will be fed into the local grid.

Enovos Luxembourg head of renewable energies & cogeneration Daniel Christnach said, "With a capacity of 2.8 MW, the amount of electricity generated corresponds to the annual consumption of 6,500 households and an annual CO2 reduction of 10,000 tonnes, thus achieving an important step towards further expanding renewable energies."

The capacity of the plant can be further expanded to 5.6MW, to meet the energy requirements of the entire city of Tongeren, added Christnach.

Enovos owns 24.9% of the project while its developers NPG Energy and Pholpa own 47.6% and 27.5% respectively.
