The C$1.3bn natural gas-fired power plant will generate enough electricity to meet the requirements of more than half of existing power demands in Calgary, the partners said.
Enmax president and CEO Gianna Manes said: "With this crucial infrastructure added to Alberta’s electricity system, we will bring reliable electricity to Albertans for decades to come."
Shepard Energy Centre was launched by Enmax in 2007. Capital Power entered into a joint venture with Enmax in 2012 to construct and acquire 50% in the center.
The combined-cycle facility features two 240MW M501G1 natural gas-fired turbines, two Vogt triple pressure heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and a 320MW reheat steam turbine.
The turbines were supplied by Mitsubishi and the facility was constructed by Kiewit Black & Veatch.
The water for the cooling towers will be supplied from The City of Calgary’s Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Capital Power president and CEO Brian Vaasjo said: "We look forward to continuing to work with ENMAX to deliver Genesee 4 & 5, Alberta’s next large natural gas-fuelled generation facility near the end of the decade."
