Under the agreement, Enerkem will sell renewable methanol, to be produced from non-recyclable waste at company’s facility in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Enerkem Alberta Biofuels, Enerkem’s subsidiary in Edmonton, is planning to initially produce and sell methanol.
Further, the facility will subsequently produce cellulosic ethanol from methanol, and the capacity is expected to be ten million gallons annually.
Enerkem president and CEO Vincent Chornet said the proprietary technology platform allows for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals, including methanol, which the company can sell as an end-product or convert into cellulosic ethanol.
Methanex North America Marketing and Logistics vice-president Vanessa James said methanol is a viable and economic alternative fuel and, when produced from waste, it is an important step towards broader acceptance in a number of markets.
