The new facility, earmarked for a section of land at the corner of Chatham Street and Glebe Road, is part of EnergyAustralia’s record A$719 million capital works program that is being rolled out across the Hunter region between 2005 and 2010.
Geoff Lilliss, general manager of networks at EnergyAustralia, said that the new substation would be required by 2009 to 2010 to replace the existing Adamstown substation that is scheduled to be retired in the years ahead. According to Mr Lilliss, the new substation would service around 16,000 customers across Adamstown, Merewether, Hamilton, Hamilton South, Merewether West and Broadmeadow.
Mr Lilliss said: These are popular residential postcodes with reasonably high urban density, which means demand for electricity in the area is increasing. We’ve spent considerable time investigating options for a new substation location, as few suitable sites were available.
We’ve purchased four properties adjacent to our Merewether bulk supply facility and we’re now looking at design and landscaping options that will enhance the local environment.
