Funding will be made available under the department’s SunShot initiative to 10 small business-led projects to reduce installation costs of solar energy systems.

The projects selected will look to explore solutions that include advances in photovoltaic technology, energy storage, balance of system hardware and power electronics as well as streamlined interconnection.

California-based solar panel manufacturer Stion secured the biggest investment under the current outlay – $2m to develop more efficient modules.

The SunShot Initiative is a collaborative national effort to make solar energy cost-competitive with other forms of energy by the end of the year 2020.
