Enercon is taking an equity position in NuScale and will utilise its licensing expertise to support the development of the Design Certification Application (DCA) for NuScale’s 45 MW integral pressurized water reactor.
The NuScale SMR would be factory made and shipped for deployment in sets of up to 12 units for scalable nuclear power plants with capacities of up to 540 MW.
"Enercon’s experience and capabilities in the areas of new plant licensing will be a powerful asset moving forward," commented John Hopkins, NuScale Power president and CEO.
Enercon, founded in 1983, currently provides engineering support to around 90 of the 100 US operating nuclear power plants, and also has a base in Abu Dhabi. The company joins NuScale’s "growing team of partners," including majority investor Fluor Corporation and Rolls-Royce, which are supporting the deployment of the NuScale SMR.
Last year, NuScale Power was selected by the US Department of Energy to receive up to $226 million of matching funds to support the further development of its SMR design and to secure a design certification from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The aim of the DOE programme is to bring small modular reactor technology to market by 2025.
