Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were E7.40 billion for the first half of 2008, an increase of 66%, compared to E4.46 billion for the first half of 2007. Earnings before interest and taxes amounted to E5.28 billion in the first half of 2008, compared to E3.13 billion for the first half of 2007.

The Enel Group net income was E2.85 billion in the first half of 2008, a 43.8% increase, compared to E1.98 billion for the same period of 2007.

The group’s electricity sales to end customers in the first half of 2008 totaled 135.8TWh, of which 68.9TWh was sold in Italy and 66.9TWh sold abroad. In Italy, sales of electricity on the free market in the first half of 2008 totaled 25.8TWh, a 7.4TWh increase versus the first half of 2007, mainly due to further opening up of the market. As a result, sales on the enhanced protection and safeguard markets declined by 8.4TWh.

Fulvio Conti, Enel’s CEO, said: The excellent results achieved in the first half of 2008 confirm the success of our international expansion strategy together with the efficiency measures undertaken in the domestic market. The outlook for 2008 is positive with significant growth compared to last year, thanks largely to the contribution of Endesa, which is itself continuing to show improved results.
