Italian utility giant Enel has announced plans to install solar panels at 1,200 of its large out-of-town transformer stations by 2010. The move comes as part of a euro300 million programme that will see more than 35 MW of solar generation developed.

Enel’s 1,200 transformer stations will be fitted with solar panels with a total capacity of 24 MW. Added to this is the 6 MW installation currently being constructed on 10 hectares of land close to the site of the never completed nuclear plant at Montalto di Castro and a 5 MW thermodynamic solar plant at Priolo Gargallo.
