Once complete, the plant will feature around 225,000 modules (mostly thin-film) and generate up to 80GWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power around 45,000 Chilean households and curb CO2 emissions of around 50,000 tonnes.
3Sun, the 50-50 joint venture between Enel Green Power, Sharp and STMicroelectronics, will manufacture the modules at its Catania factory for the plant, which is claimed to be Enel Green Power’s first PV plant in Chile.
To be built with a total investment of around $60m, the project will supply its output to the Chilean central region transmission network (SIC) under a 15-year power purchase agreement via the Diego de Almagro substation, around 3km away from the plant.
