Enel Green Power Brasil (EGPB) Participações has started the construction of the 172MW Morro do Chapéu Sul wind farm cluster in the state of Bahia in north-eastern Brazil.
The $380m cluster, which is situated in the municipalities of Morro do Chapéu and Cafarnaum, features six wind farms.
The facilities include the Ventos de Santa Esperança, Ventos de Santa Dulce, Ventos de São Paulo and Ventos de São Abraão projects, each of which will have capacity of 28MW, and the Ventos de São Mário and Boa Vista, with 30MW each.
The cluster is anticipated to enter service during the first half of 2018. The six wind farms will be capable of generating more than 830 GWh of energy per year.
Enel aims to utilise its own resources to fund the construction of the facility.
Enel Brazil country manager Carlo Zorzoli said: “Through the launch of this significant cluster of projects in a wind resource-rich area we once again confirm ourselves as a reliable, strategic player that contributes to the sustainable development of the overall Brazilian electricity sector.”
The four 28MW capacity wind farms are supported by 20-year power supply contracts with a group of Brazilian electricity distribution companies.
On the other hand, the two 30MW capacity wind farms have 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) signed in the free market.
The energy gnerated by the wind farms can meet the annual consumption needs of more than 320,000 households in the country.
Enel already operates 264MW of wind farms in Bahia state and is currently building the 180MW Delfina and 90MW Cristalandia wind farms in the state.
