For Endesa meanwhile, the agreement marks a significant step in its participation in the development of these technologies, specifically within its stated goal of building a commercially viable show facility by 2015, under the umbrella of the European Union program for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Among other initiatives, the agreement encompasses the supply to the platform by Endesa of the varieties of coal and limestone available to the company and the provision of other services necessary to run the experimental platform.
In addition, Endesa will provide the foundation with technical support and advisory services during the design, construction, commissioning and operational phases of the platform. As compensation, Endesa will be offered the opportunity to train in-house staff on operational know-how relating to emerging CO2 capture technologies.
Endesa will be free to leverage the platform to conduct its own projects. Specifically the foundation gives Endesa the opportunity to undertake experimental programs related to the activities initially contemplated for the platform, including those related to fuel preparation and CO2 capture systems, creating the opportunity to obtain CO2 in special conditions to enable its subsequent transportation and storage.
