Spanish power giant Endesa has signed a contract with engineering firm Inerco for the installation of the so-called Advanced Boiler Automation for Combustion Optimisation (ABACO) technology, a combustion control system designed to cut emissions.

In the first phase, ABACO technology will be installed in the Compostilla, Los Barrios and Teruel thermal generators at a cost of around €13 million. In phase II starting in 2006, the project will rolled out to another 11 of Endesa’s thermal generators in Spain.

As a result of the deal Endesa will be able to cut CO2 emissions by more than 300 kilotonnes per year and halve its NOx emissions.
