In the future, the tenant Merkur Offshore GmbH will make use of the new facilities. The general contractor for the construction work is the Dutch construction company BV Kooi Bouwbedrijf from Appingedam / NL.

EMO’s logistics plan through the water-side connection was very convincing. First, a dock was built in 2015, with a length of 2 x150 metres, which offered the ideal base for service trips from and to the Merkur wind farm. A modern offshore base with a warehouse, an outdoor area and an attached office complex was built later. This base contains offices and meeting rooms, changing rooms, showers, and a recreation area with a kitchen. “We’re delighted that the trust placed in us has obtained confirmation of our concept,” the EMO managing director Knut Gerdes declares.

Starting in the spring of 2018, the occupier of the entire infrastructure will be the plant manufacturer GE Renewables (GE) which will prepare and construct the equipment for the Merkur wind farm. “Eemshaven is an excellent location for supervising the equipment in the wind farm effectively. It was important for us to find a partner whose service, competence, and flexibility were convincing,” Markus van Hümmel of Merkur Offshore GmbH said.

Merkur Offshore GmbH will be operating the Merkur wind farm, which is currently being constructed in the German North Sea. The wind farm is in the German Exclusive Economic Zone about 45 km north of Borkum Island and including about 66 wind turbines of the manufacturers GE, type “Haliade 150” with a capacity of 6 MW each. Merkur Offshore GmbH has signed a long-term service contract with GE for the delivery of turbines. To make sure the work is done in a reliable fashion, Merkur Offshore GmbH and GE looked for a suitable location and found it in Eemshaven at EMO BV.

Construction will be completed in the spring of 2018 and will start operations for Merkur. The project involves an investment of approximately EUR 1.4 million.
