Brooklyn Energy is a Nova Scotia-based 30MW biomass electrical co-generation facility with the capacity to generate 173,000MWh a year.
Nova Scotia Power is the recipient of the electricity generated at the plant under a long-term power purchase agreement.
While the existing workforce at the facility will continue with its operations, Emera will source the requisite fuel from domestic suppliers.
The Province of Nova Scotia has agreed to partner with Crown Forest licensees to supply fiber for the plant, and provide wood fiber if required.
Emera president and CEO Chris Huskilson said that Brooklyn Energy is an important addition to the company’s energy generation portfolio as it complies with its strategy to produce greater renewable energy.
"The plant will continue to generate clean energy for Nova Scotians and provide a long-term market for local biomass suppliers," added Huskilson.
