The project developer would be required to design, finance, construct, own and operate the power plant for 20 to 25 years and sell the power produced to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.
On May 9, 2009, Egypt announced the tender for the wind farm on a build-operate-own (BOO) basis. Companies were invited to submit required documents by July 21, 2009 for the selection process.
Electricity Minister Hassan Younes said that in June 2009 a total of 72 international companies had expressed interest in the tender.
Egypt targets to produce 12% of its power from wind farms and a total of 20% from renewable sources by 2020.
