Eggborough Power Limited (EPL) has put forward plans to demolish the Eggborough coal-fired power plant and build a new gas-fired combined cycle plant at the site in north-east England.

EPL, owned by Czech firm Energeticky a Prumyslovy Holding AS, says it will apply for planning permission for a 2000 MW gas-fired facility at the site near Goole, Yorkshire.

It expects a decision on consent to be made by late 2018, it added.

EPL will build an underground gas pipeline to connect the power station to the UK’s gas transmission network. It is “currently undertaking technical and environmental studies to identify the most appropriate location” for the plant at the site.

The new plant won’t be operational until 2022 at the earliest, by which time the coal-fired station will be decommissioned, the company said.
