The companies previously announced a contract for 116 monopiles in November 2016, and today’s news extends the contract to cover all 174 foundations for what will become the biggest wind farm in the world.
Each monopile foundation has a diameter of up to 8.1m and weighs approximately 900 tons.
Claus Nørgaard, Engineering, Procurement and Construction Director for the project said: “Hornsea Project One will be the first wind farm in the world to have a capacity of more than 1GW and will provide enough energy for well over one million UK homes. Using the same foundation solution for all turbines means we benefit from economies of scale and experience, and therefore maximise efficient construction of the project. “
Michael Hof, COO/Managing Director at EEW SPC, said “We are very pleased that DONG Energy placed their trust in EEW SPC again. This demonstrates the excellent relationship between our companies and we are looking forward to contributing in bringing this project to success.”
Hornsea Project One will be located 120km off the Yorkshire Coast. Onshore works began in 2016 and offshore construction will begin in late 2017. The project is due to be completed in 2020.
