Located on the Spanish border, the Ventominho project will comprise 120 wind turbines rated at 240MW, 76 of which have entered service, representing 152MW in capacity. The 2MW wind turbines have been supplied by German manufacturer Enercon.
With 240MW in total capacity, the Ventominho wind farm will reportedly be Europe’s largest onshore wind energy facility with a single point of connection to the grid. The wind farm is set to be fully operational by the end of 2008.
EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF-EN) Portugal and Eolverde, a subsidiary of the Spanish utility Endesa, together jointly own 85% of the project.
This latest commissioning has reportedly strengthened EDF Energies Nouvelles’s positions in the Portuguese wind energy market. The group operates over 296MW of gross capacity in service, plus 112MW at the Arada wind farm that is under construction and due to enter service by 2008 year-end.
