EDF Energy said that, based on the company’s current generation fleet, this reduction in carbon intensity represents a decrease of around 12 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by 2020.
The company plans to ensure this reduction by generating electricity from diverse sources and adding nuclear power to its generation mix. EDF Energy will also invest in around 1,000MW of renewable electricity production, develop new gas turbine capacity and help with the development of clean coal technologies.
The plan is part of EDF Energy’s ‘Climate Commitments,’ which sets targets and outlines how the company will reduce its own environmental impact and help UK customers reduce their energy consumption.
EDF Energy said that by developing ways of maintaining profitability, while also encouraging its customers to use less energy, the company is making a fundamental change in its whole approach to energy and energy services.
EDF Energy is aiming to reduce the proportion of CO2 emissions caused by its customers’ energy consumption by 15% by 2020, through promoting highly efficient appliances, domestic microgeneration products and the uptake of electronic billing, as well as installing intelligent metering.
EDF Energy is also going to cut CO2 emissions from its offices and depots by 30% and from its transport by 20% by 2012, and reduce the volume of materials its sends to landfills while also increasing recycling rates at its offices and depots.
