The offshore engineering consultancy has developed and patented a rigid pipelay technology called PREP (Plastic Reeled Elastic Pipelay) system, which can be used to deploy subsea pipelay using smaller vessels and reducing installation time and costs.

PREP is a modular system that has been developed to lay reeled rigid pipes from smaller vessels and can be installed within 48 hours.

Traditionally, the rigid pipelay projects cost are very high due to the hiring of sophisticated vessels and takes up to 14 days for installation.

The PREP technology uses most of the components used in the conventional way of assembly but avoids the need to mount them on specialist pipelay vessel and thus reduces associated costs and time.

Ecosse PREP system also takes advantage of the underutilized elastic properties of the steel pipe to lay the pipes from smaller vessels.

Ecosse Subsea Systems managing director Mike Wilson said the firm is expecting lot of attention on the PREP technology at the Subsea UK 2013.

"PREP is an enabling technology which will allow market entry for a wider range of participants, principally the Tier 2 Contractors," Wilson added.
