The Parintins City project is part of a plan which aims at improving the daily lives of the customers served by Eletrobrás in the Amazon region.
For this pilot, ELO is providing dual mode smart meters that communicate over power line or by radio frequency through Echelon’s multipurpose expansion port feature.
While leveraging its Energy Control Networking Platform, Echelon is supplying smart sensor and metering sub-systems to the meter-maker.
Commenting on the pilot project, Echelon Worldwide Markets senior VP Michael Anderson noted that the company has provided the solution to ELO that enables a grid modernization path for Eletrobrás.
"Delivering safe, reliable energy is the main mission of the smart grid, and utilities like Eletrobrás with grid modernization projects lead the way for other Brazilian cities and towns," Anderson added.
ELO Business Development VP Marcos Rizzo remarked that Parintins will become the first city in Brazil with all customers having installed smart meters.
"Echelon and ELO are able to offer the Parintins project unmatched flexibility and time to market advantages based on the industry standard Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP)," Rizzo added.
As part of this project, ELO is set to deploy 12,000 more smart meters by the end of 2013.
