SC Apa Canal Ilfov, a regional company providing water and wastewater services in the county, will get RON28.6m (€6.4m) loan from the EBRD.

The loan will co-finance the company’s RON308.4m (€68.5m) two-year regional investment plan approved by the EU under Romania’s Cohesion fund programme.

The investment will expand and modernize its water and wastewater network, ensuring clean water and better sanitation for 60,000 people in eight towns.

EBRD director for municipal and environmental infrastructure James Hyslop said: "Our investment will help Apa Canal Ilfov improve services, reach more people in its area, reduce water losses and increase efficiency while complying with EU water and wastewater directives."

The bank said SC Apa Canal Ilfov is the 23rd regional water operator in the country which has received financing under its Romania EU Cohesion Fund Water Co-Financing Framework.

The facility was originally approved in November 2010 with an initial investment volume of €200m. It was increased by an additional €130m in September 2012 after local demand.

The EBRD has so far mobilized about €2bn of EU funding in Romania’s water and wastewater plants.
