The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) has issued a final environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact on proposed modifications to Asaayi dam and spillway located on the Navajo Nation in northwest McKinley County, New Mexico, US.

The proposed project, a joint venture between USBR, the Navajo Nation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, is being carried out to correct safety deficiencies associated with Asaayi dam and spillway. Proposed corrective measures include increasing the spillway capacity, modifying the outlets works, repairing the toe drain system, and increasing the crest height of the dam. Project construction will necessitate draining the reservoir and diverting inflows from Bowl Creek.

The construction will be phased over a two-year period beginning in 2007.
