German gas utility E.ON Ruhrgas is deliberating whether to build a new LNG terminal infrastructure in the northern Adriatic, the firm's chief executive Burkhard Bergmann has told the Boersen-Zeitung newspaper.

Asked whether the recent Russia-Ukraine gas crisis had prompted E.ON to reconsider the nature of Russia’s role in supplying large amounts of gas to Germany, Mr Bergmann replied that his view of Russia as a reliable partner was unaltered.

E.ON is however investing significantly in LNG technology. On top of the plans for a terminal on the Adriatic coast, the firm has also expressed a desire to build similar equipment in the UK. E.ON has also dusted off long-dormant plans to develop a site at Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany to accept imported LNG.
