A 60MW solar facility is planned to be built near Monroe, Union County and the other 15.4MW project will be developed in Mocksville, Davie County.
Both the projects are subject to approval from the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC). If approved, construction on the facilities will begin in March, with planned completion in the end of 2016.
Strata Solar will design and build the Monroe solar project, while Crowder Construction will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the Mocksville project.
Duke Energy distributed energy resources senior vice president Rob Caldwell said: "As part of our solar expansion efforts in North Carolina, we will continue to seize opportunities to both develop as well as purchase projects that enable us to deliver more renewable energy to our customers."
Duke Energy Carolinas will own and operate both the projects.
Construction is currently underway on the company’s four solar facilities in Bladen, Duplin, Onslow and Wilson counties which have a combined capacity of around 140MW.
The company has invested over $4bn in wind and solar facilities across 12 states in the past eight years, with plans to further invest about $3bn in renewable energy over the next five years.
