Progress Energy Carolinas, which was acquired by Duke Energy in 2012, submitted the combined construction and operating license application to the NRC in February 2008.

Duke Energy Nuclear executive vice president and president Dhiaa Jamil said the Harris site is well suited for new nuclear generation and has not been eliminated from the company’s long-term consideration as a site to expand our nuclear fleet.

"Our most recent forecast indicates two additional nuclear units at Harris will not be needed in the next 15 years," Jamil added.

Duke Energy said it will now focus on its $9bn fleet modernization program under which it acquired Dan River and H.F. Lee natural gas combined-cycle plants and Cliffside unit.

The company said it will add the Sutton combined-cycle plant later in 2013.
