A severe drought in eastern Turkey has caused an acute shortage of electricity due to low water levels in many large hydro reservoirs.

Water levels at hydro plants on the Euphrates river — Keban, Karakaya, Ataturk and Karkamis account for one-fifth of national output — are experiencing their lowest water levels in ten years. Officials said the levels in the dams were so low that it might take four or five years before they return to normal.
