Located about 8km from the Holderness coast in Yorkshire, UK, the £800m wind farm features 35 Siemens’ 6MW direct drive wind turbines, to generate electricity for more than 150,000 homes.
Siemens Wind and Renewables Division offshore CEO Michael Hannibal said: "This is the first time Siemens has installed the 6MW direct drive turbine with a 154m diameter rotor on a commercial-scale project.
"The Westermost Rough project reinforces our wide-ranging experience in offshore wind and is leading the way to bring the costs of offshore wind energy down."
The purpose-built installation vessel Sea Challenger, which is owned by Dong Energy and Siemens’ joint venture A2SEA, has supported the turbines installation work.
Siemens will be responsible for service and maintenance of the turbines for the first five years.
The project, which has an operation life of 25 years, is jointly owned by Dong Energy with 50% stake and Marubeni and the UK Green Investment Bank each holding 25%.
Dong Energy CEO Henrik Poulsen said: "Westermost Rough is a ground-breaking project which is playing an important part in our drive to reduce the cost of electricity from offshore wind."
