Once operational, the solar project will generate over 500kW of clean energy, which is enough electricity to power about 125 homes.
The solar installation at the Gloucester facility will supply its output to the electric grid for use by Dominion Virginia Power customers.
The $2m project, which is claimed to be Virginia’s largest roof solar system, is part of Dominion’s Solar Partnership Program.
PowerSecure, which has been selected as the EPC contractor, expects to begin construction in December 2013, while commissioning is scheduled for early 2014.
Under the program, Dominion leases rooftop or ground space at commercial, industrial or public facilities for solar power installations.
Dominion Customer Solutions and Energy Conservation vice president Ken Barker said the program is designed to expand its understanding of community-based solar energy by studying its impact and assessing its benefits.
"The Canon project is our largest installation to date and will enable us to evaluate the benefits of distributed generation on our system," added Barker.
The Gloucester Economic Development Authority (EDA) and its director were partners throughout the development of this project, working with Dominion Virginia Power, Canon Virginia and Branch Banking and Trust.
Canon Virginia president and CEO Toru Nishizawa said the company has partnered with Dominion Virginia Power that strengthens its strong environmental commitment.
"IRT’s mission is not only to grow Canon’s product recycling efforts, but to also foster a recycling-orientated society, reduce our environmental impact through greater management efficiency, and embrace green technologies," added Nishizawa.
