AREVA has won a $73 million contract to supply nuclear fuel for Millstone 2, a 1210 MW pressurized water reactor in Waterford, Connecticut.

The contract with US utility Dominion covers the supply of CE-14 HTP reload fuel to Millstone 2 until 2035, when the plant’s operating licence expires.

In addition to covering fuel fabrication, the agreement also includes associated analytical studies and engineering services. Fuel will be manufactured at AREVA’s facility in Richland, Washington.

"The AREVA HTP design for the CE 14×14 fuel configuration has operated well in the Millstone Unit 2 core, helping us achieve our fuel performance goals," said Kerry Basehore, director of Nuclear Analysis and Fuel at Dominion.

Millstone 2 is a Combustion Engineering pressurized water reactor, which began operation in December 1975. In November 2005, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) extended the reactor’s operating licence by 20 years; it now expires on 31 July 2035.
