Previously, funding of CCS projects by Department of Energy was focused on coal-fired electric power generators, although 19% of US greenhouse gas emissions came from industrial sources. DOE says that initially, electricity generators, would receive the grants.

For the grants, DOE targets projects that are designed to capture 1 million tons per annum of CO2 per plant by 2015.

The DOE informed that it also provides $100 million in funding for demonstrations of beneficial uses of carbon dioxide, such as conversion to chemicals or fuel.
