Volume XVI Issue 2

Stilling basins are provided to dissipate excess energy of flow to ensure the safety of hydraulic structures like dams, spillways and barrages etc. In the present study, efforts were made to develop new stilling basin models by experimentation for a 4cm x 4cm size of the square pipe outlet for a Froude number Fr = 6.83. The stilling basin models were tested by providing appurtenances like splitter block, impact wall and end sills of different shapes and sizes. An erodible material was used for measurement of scour at the end of each stilling basin for a constant run time. The performance of each model is compared by noting the maximum depth of scour and its location at the end of the basin and expressing them in terms of a non-dimensional number. A few models were also tested by changing the tail water depth and for a longer run time. It was concluded that the wedge shaped splitter block is quite effective in splitting the jet within the shorter length of the stilling basin.
