The project has been approved by the Danish Energy, Utilities and Climate Minister Lars Christian Lilleholt.

The new interconnection between the Eastern Danish and German electricity grids through the Baltic Sea is planned to be build by Energinet.dk in partnership with German transmission system operator, 50Hertz.

Energinet.dk executive vice-president, CTO Torben Glar Nielsen said: "The Minister’s approval is important and helps create the future, cross-border electricity market, where much more electricity must be traded back and forth across borders.

"On the one hand, Danish power stations and wind turbine owners can sell more electricity to German consumers and make a profit on it.

"On the other hand, Danish consumers can buy electricity in Germany, for example when the wind is not blowing and the wind turbines are not spinning. This makes the green transition less expensive and more effective."

The €320m project involves development of Kriegers Flak-Combined Grid Solution (CGS) in the Baltic Sea which will use the national grid connections to the Baltic 1 & 2 offshore wind farms in German waters and Denmark’s planned 600MW Kriegers Flak wind park.

The CGS will enable the green electricity trade over long distances and cross-border while helping the transition to clean energy in the two countries.

In 2015, the European Commission (EC) approved the revised technical plan for the interconnector, which will be backed by EUR150m ($168m) funding from the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR).

The firms are planning to commission the project by the end of 2018.
