The Kaloko dam on the Hawaiian island of Kauai has collapsed following days of torrential rain, with one person killed and at least seven others reported missing.

The 12m high earthen dam gave way yesterday, with reports suggesting that 1.7Mm3 of water was released. The exact cause of the breach has not yet been disclosed.

Search crews reportedly recovered an unidentified body from the floodwaters, with the search and rescue mission still continuing.

A flood warning has been issued for the entire state, and officials are now assessing the safety of other dams in the Kauai hills.
