Representing a key milestone in Covanta’s growth initiative, the plant allows the company a new avenue to recover value from waste and divert materials from landfills.
"I’m proud of the way our team recognized the opportunity to recycle additional non-ferrous metal and quickly got this new system up and running," said Covanta chief operating officer Seth Myones.
Back in March of 2012, the company entered into a strategic alliance with Steinert US to augment its non-ferrous recovery systems in facilities that did not have such systems and enhance capabilities where such systems existed.
"The new recycling system at the Energy-from-Waste facility complements our recycling initiatives very nicely and is a great example of how energy recovery and robust recycling programs can go hand in hand," said director of Fairfax County division of solid waste disposal and resource recovery Joyce Doughty.
Covanta’s energy-from-waste plant helped reduce 15,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2011.
