LPT is a major underground electricity superhighway project that is being built to create routes for 400kV high-voltage electricity cables beneath the capital to provide reliable power supply.
Costain, using the tunnel boring machine (TBM) Cleopatra carved an 8km drive from Eade Road in Haringey, north London, to St John’s Wood Substation, in the northwest.
As part of the project, Costain has completed almost half of the 32km of the LPT project, using TBMs Cleopatra and Evelyn.
Costain project manager Andy Firth said the company has put nearly 18 months of work and effort to complete the route.
"While the team is celebrating this success, this flagship project for National Grid has another 16km of tunnel to be completed and the team is already in the process of addressing this challenge and delivering the next milestone," Firth added.
National Grid Cable Tunnels head David Luetchford said, "This project is an excellent illustration of what National Grid is all about – helping keep people plugged into their power supplies."
