French company hydroplus has been awarded a contract by the Government of Gujarat in India to equip eight existing dams. By using the fusegate system, capacity is to be increased without increasing the submerged area or constructing major new civil works.

Altogether 537 fusegates will be installed so total capacity will be increased by 52.3M m3. The increased storage will allow more irrigation and water provision to nearby villages. This is the second contract Hydroplus has been awarded in Gujarat. In 1998 the company installed 253 fusegates on four dams.

•Low water during the dry season concerns the Zimbabwean authorities, who have asked Hydroplus to increase the storage capacity of Ruti dam.

Hydroplus says the installation of 240 1.6m high fusegates will increase the dam’s storage capacity by 25%.
