A new program developed by Consumers Energy, along with Michigan State University and the state’s agricultural community, will expand renewable energy sources.
The farms selected include Beaver Creek Farms in Coopersville, Brooke View Dairy in Freeport, Green Meadow Farms in Elsie, and Scenic View Dairy in Fennville.
The farms will be allowed to generate electricity under long-term contracts that collectively offer 2.6MW of electric capacity, which is enough to power about 2,800 homes.
Consumers Energy said anaerobic digesters generate electricity from biodegradable material.
Consumers Energy vice president of energy supply operations Timothy Sparks said: "We are excited to move forward with this new program to develop dependable, renewable energy produced here in our state for the Michigan homes and businesses we serve.
"The addition of anaerobic digestion brings more diversity to our existing renewable energy supply from wind, solar, biomass and hydroelectric dams."
Consumers Energy plans to invest over $6bn in Michigan over the next five years in energy efficiency, renewable energy, environmental and customer service improvements.
