The power project, which is at the Nghi Son Industrial Zone in Thanh Hoa province, is expected to consume approximately 1.6 million tons of coal a year.
Nghi Son 1 will generate 3.6 billion kWh of electricity annually and will have two production units. The first unit is scheduled to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2013, and the second unit by the second quarter of 2014.
State-run power utility Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) is the owner of the Nghi Son 1 power plant and 85% of the investment needed for the plant is being provided by the Japanese government via Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
