Work has begun on China’s US$1.79B Laxiwa hydroelectric power plant.

The 4200MW plant, located in Guide county, northwestern Qinghai province, is set to be the biggest hydroelectric facility on the Yellow river, China’s second longest waterway.

Laxiwa dam will be 250m high and the power plant will generate an estimated 10.22BkWh annually. The first generating units are scheduled to go into operation in 2008, and the dam should be completed in 2010.
