The world’s largest photovoltaic power station is now under construction in southern Portugal near Serpa, 200km southeast of Lisbon.

The 11 MW plant, under development by Portuguese renewables company Catavento, will see 52,000 photovoltaic modules cover a 60-hectare site on a south facing hillside.

Powerlight will supply the modules for the €58 million project, which is being financed by owners GE Energy Financial Services while Catavento will manage the facility. PowerLight designed, will operate and maintain the plant using its PowerTracker technology which allows the panels to follow the sun as it moves across the sky.

The plant is due to begin commercial operations in January 2007.
