China has begun construction of a CNY3bn ($481m) nuclear power reactor last month, according to the project operator, Huaneng Shandong Shidao Bay Nuclear Power (HSSBNP).
The 200MW capacity reactor, which is being built at Shidao Bay in Shandong Province, will start generating power by the end of 2017, reports Xinhua.
The company said that it broke ground for the project in December and also poured a portion of the foundation.
The country has recently lifted ban on new projects which came into effect following Fukushima disaster in 2011.
In October 2012, China’s State Council had approved a nuclear power safety plan and a development schedule for the nuclear industry.
China intends to more than triple its nuclear power capacity from 12.54 million kW at the end of 2011 to 40 million kW by 2015.
