The solar power system, valued at about $60m, will be financed, owned and operated by Constellation Energy as part of the state of Maryland’s Generating Clean Horizons initiative.
Constellation Energy will use nearly 220,000 advanced thin film PV panels from First Solar to build the power system on 100 acres of land leased from Mount St Mary’s University.
First Solar will also provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the power project.
Once operational, which is scheduled for early 2012, the facility is expected to generate about 22 million kWh of emissions-free electricity per year.
The state of Maryland’s Department of General Services and the University System of Maryland will buy the electricity generated by the power project through the 20-year solar power purchase agreements.
