Community Windpower has submitted a planning application to North Ayrshire Council for the 21MW Blackshaw Community wind farm in Scotland.
Located about 2 km east of West Kilbride in North Ayrshire, the proposed facility will be adjacent to the existing Ardrossan wind farm.
The Blackshaw wind farm, which will feature six turbines, is expected to generate an initial inward investment of about £24m associated to the building works.
After completion, the wind farm is expected to generate approximately 55,188 MWh of energy per year, enough to power some 13,165 local households.
The wind farm, which will be in operation for 25 years, will avoid about 23,730 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. It will contribute towards the Scottish Government’s aim of generating 100% of its energy by renewable sources by 2020.
Community Windpower aims to hire local and regional companies for the construction of the wind farm.
Wind Towers (Scotland) supplies the steel wind turbine towers for Community Windpower’s projects from its steel tower fabrication facility in Campbeltown.
A new report has recently revealed that Scotland is the leading country for onshore wind in the UK with just more than 4,918MW installed.
The installed capacity can power 200,000 more households than the 2.4 million recorded by the 2011 census.
The report, undertaken by BiGGAR Economics for RenewableUK, has said that the onshore wind industry generated £906 million in gross value added revenue to the UK economy in 2014.
