India’s first community-constructed mini hydro power plant has been successfully commissioned at Chizami village in Phek district, Nagaland.

The 2x100kW plant – funded by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources – was set up by the village councils of Chizami and Sumi. Technical assistance was provided by Nagaland Renewable Energy Development Agency.

The two villages will run the plant, with the state government urged to make arrangements for evacuating surplus electricity from the project.
