The Lithuanian public tenders commission has selected a consortium of European and US companies to negotiate a contract to build a $400 million transmission line project, Reuters reports.

The commission intends to open negotiations with the Power Bridge Consortium which comprises the Stanton Group, Cal Energy, Duke Power Engineering, Siemens and Saguler Guff & Co. The decision still requires government approval. Second choice, if negotiations with Power Bridge fail, is Enron.

The winning group is expected to finance and construct power lines to export Lithuania’s relatively cheaply generated electricity to the large markets of western Europe. Under the terms of the tender, Lithuania will promise to sell the winner no less than 6 million MWh of power for ten years.

Power Bridge proposes to build a 1000 MW converter station as part of the project. Enron suggested a 600 MW converter station.
