A diesel admixture with 7% biodiesel is currently available in some parts of the country, and should be made available across the entire country by the end of 2009.

ECOPETROL S.A. is leading the biofuel push in Colombia and in 2008 purchased an 80% stake in a biofuel joint venture. The company is set to open an ethanol plant on an 11,000 hectare area in the eastern Llanos Basin.

“About 80% of all gasoline currently consumed in Colombia is mixed with 10 percent ethanol,” Energy and Mines Minister Hernan Martinez said.
