Cogentrix Energy has secured a conditional commitment for a $90.6m loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy (DOE) for the construction of a 30MW solar generating facility in the state of Colorado.

The loan guarantee will support the construction of the Alamosa Solar Generating project, located in south-central Colorado near the city of Alamosa.

The 30MW facility will use high concentration solar photovoltaic systems consisting of concentrating optics and multi-junction solar cell panels that are controlled by a dual-axis tracking system.

The solar power project is expected to produce approximately 75,000MWh of clean renewable energy per year, enough to power over 6,500 homes, and will avoid the emissions of over 43,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Public Service Company of Colorado will purchase the electricity output generated from the Alamosa Solar Generating project.
