EC overlooks role of cogeneration in biomass plan

According to lobby group Cogen Europe, the European Commission’s proposal to create an EU Biomass Action Plan has failed to take account of the role of cogeneration.

The EC’s aim to boost the use of biomass by an additional 74 million mtoe from biomass on top of the 56 million mtoe already produced in 2001 has been spilt between heating and electricity. A Cogen Europe spokesman is quoted as saying, “The proposed split into the individual contributions of the heat and electricity sectors to the indicative biomass target suggests that the use of cogeneration to convert biomass simultaneously into heat and power has been completely overlooked.”
