A coal mining accident has left 20 miners dead alongside 14 injured in the latest mining tragedy to hit China.

The mishap occurred when a steel cable pulling two carriages at a coal mine snapped resulting in overturning the carriages.

The coal mine is located in Baiyin city of Gansu province with its officials refusing to comment on the incident.

In August 2012, a gas explosion in the Sichuan left 43 miners dead; according to official estimates the total toll of coal mining related deaths in the country stands at 1,973 for 2011.

China is the world’s biggest coal consumer in the world but safety remains an ongoing concern at its mines.
